What is Gunning Fog Index?
The Gunning Fog index is a readability formula that estimates the years of formal education a reader needs to understand a passage on first reading. It is calculated from average sentence length and the percentage of "complex" words (three or more syllables, excluding proper nouns and common suffixes).
Why Gunning Fog Index matters
Algos use Fog index as a structural-clarity proxy. SEC filings with Fog scores above 18 (post-graduate level) tend to score lower on algo comprehension, with measurable downstream effects: tighter algo skepticism, slower auto-summarization in feed services, and reduced visibility in Bloomberg/AlphaSense headline streams. The SEC itself has cited Fog index in plain-English disclosure guidance since 1998. Yet the median 10-K still scores Fog 19–22, well above the recommended 12–14 range for retail accessibility.
